How much perfumer's alcohol do you need?

A finished alcohol perfume is mostly alcohol. Pick your strength, then work out the split:

Strength Fragrance oil Alcohol For 30 ml For 1 litre
Eau de toilette 10–15% 85–90% 3–4.5 ml oil + 25.5–27 ml alcohol 100–150 ml oil + 850–900 ml alcohol
Eau de parfum 18–22% 78–82% 6 ml oil + 24 ml alcohol 200 ml oil + 800 ml alcohol
Extrait 25–30% 70–75% 7.5–9 ml oil + 21–22.5 ml alcohol 250–300 ml oil + 700–750 ml alcohol

So a 1 litre bottle of perfumer's alcohol makes roughly 1.25 litres of eau de parfum, or about forty 30 ml bottles.

How to make an eau de parfum with perfumer's alcohol

  1. Measure the oil. For a 30 ml eau de parfum, put 6 ml of fragrance oil into a clean glass bottle. Any of Unravel's perfume oils will work.
  2. Add a fixative. Plain alcohol evaporates in minutes and takes the lighter notes with it. Add your own fixative, or skip this step by using Unravel's Universal Perfume Base, which has fixatives already blended in.
  3. Top up with alcohol. Add 24 ml of perfumer's alcohol and shake gently.
  4. Let it rest. Cap it and leave it in a cool, dark cupboard for 2–4 weeks, shaking every few days. Alcohol perfumes smell sharp when freshly mixed and round out as they rest.
  5. Bottle it. Decant into a refillable atomizer and label it with the date and formula.

Perfumer's alcohol vs other alcohol

Use it for perfume? Why
Perfumer's alcohol (this product) Yes Grain-derived ethanol made for fragrance: evaporates cleanly and carries the scent without adding its own smell
Chemist-shop "spirit" Not recommended Often denatured with harsh-smelling additives or watered down, which can make fragrance oil turn cloudy and separate
Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol No Sharp medicinal smell that stays in the perfume; not used in fine fragrance
Universal Perfume Base Yes, easiest Fixatives already blended in: add oil, shake, rest

Frequently asked questions

What is perfumer's alcohol?

Perfumer's alcohol is high-purity ethanol used as the carrier in spray perfumes. It dissolves fragrance oil, carries the scent off the skin when you spray it, then evaporates and leaves the fragrance behind. Unravel Perfumery's fine-grade perfumer's alcohol is grain-derived.

Where can I buy perfumer's alcohol in India?

Unravel Perfumery sells fine-grade perfumer's alcohol online at unravelperfumery.com in 100 ml, 1 litre, 5 litre, 10 litre and 20 litre packs, shipped across India. You can order it alongside perfume oils, the Universal Perfume Base and atomizer bottles in one order.

What is the price of perfumer's alcohol?

At Unravel Perfumery, as of October 2026, perfumer's alcohol costs ₹100 for 100 ml, ₹500 for 1 litre, ₹1,700 for 5 litres, ₹3,200 for 10 litres and ₹5,800 for 20 litres. The bigger packs bring the price down from ₹500 to ₹290 per litre.

How much perfumer's alcohol do I need for 1 litre of perfume?

For a 1 litre eau de parfum at 20% concentration, mix 200 ml of fragrance oil with 800 ml of perfumer's alcohol. For a lighter eau de toilette, use 850–900 ml of alcohol; for an extrait, 700–750 ml.

Can I use rubbing alcohol or chemist spirit instead?

No. Isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol has a sharp medicinal smell that stays in the perfume. Chemist-shop spirit is often denatured with harsh-smelling additives or diluted with water, which can make fragrance oils go cloudy and separate. Use alcohol made for perfumery.

Do I need to add fixatives?

For a perfume that lasts, yes. Plain alcohol evaporates within minutes, and without fixatives even a strong blend can fade like a body mist. Either add your own fixatives or use Unravel Perfumery's Universal Perfume Base, which has them already blended in.

How should I store perfumer's alcohol?

Ethanol is flammable. Keep the bottle tightly closed, in a cool place out of direct sunlight, away from flames and the kitchen stove, and out of reach of children. Mix your perfumes in a ventilated room.
