Aldehyde C-9, or nonanal, is a waxy fatty aldehyde with a rosy, orange-peel character. It occurs naturally in rose and citrus oils. On its own it smells a bit like a snuffed candle; in a formula it adds that clean, sparkling lift people describe as aldehydic.
What it smells like
Waxy and fatty at first, then rosy and citrusy, with a peel-like freshness. It is strong, so smell it diluted.
How perfumers use it
Use it in traces from a 1% or 10% dilution. C-9 brightens rose, neroli and citrus accords and fills the gap between the more citrus C-10 and the more floral-soapy C-11 and C-12 aldehydes. Blends of several aldehydes usually smell more natural than one.
