Triethyl citrate (TEC) is a clear, practically odourless citrate ester used as a solvent and diluent in perfumery. Perfumers use it to make dilutions of strong materials and as a carrier in oil perfumes and attars, where it thins heavy materials without adding a smell of its own.
What it smells like
Practically odourless, with at most a faint, soft fruity-ester note. It does not change the character of what you dissolve in it.
How perfumers use it
Use it to prepare 1% and 10% dilutions of powerful aroma chemicals, to dissolve crystals such as vanillin or coumarin, and as a carrier for oil-based perfumes. It mixes well with ethanol and most fragrance materials.
Blends well with: Crystalline materials, Ethanol, DPG, Benzyl Benzoate, IPM.
