The Fragrance Pyramid Explained: Why Scent Changes Over Time

A finished perfume is not a single smell. It is a blend of many aroma materials, each evaporating at a different speed. The lightest molecules fly off your skin first; the heaviest cling for hours. Perfumers visualise this as a triangle — the fragrance pyramid (also called the olfactory pyramid) — with three layers:

  • Top notes — the opening, lasting roughly 5–20 minutes.
  • Heart (middle) notes — the main body, lasting 2–4 hours.
  • Base notes — the foundation and dry-down, lasting many hours to days.

The key driver is volatility — how readily a molecule turns into vapour. Light, volatile molecules give bright, fleeting top notes; heavy, low-volatility molecules give long, anchoring base notes. Understanding this lets you predict how your blend will behave.

A quick note on “notes” versus materials

A note is the perceived impression (“lemon,” “rose,” “musk”). A material is the actual ingredient you weigh out — a natural oil or an aroma chemical. One material can contribute across two layers, so treat the pyramid as a helpful map, not a rigid law.

Top Notes: The First Impression

Top notes are what you smell the instant you spray. They are bright, fresh and high-impact, but short-lived. Their job is to grab attention and lead you into the heart.

Typical top-note families include citrus (bergamot, lemon, orange), light herbs and aromatics (lavender, basil), and fresh synthetics. A wonderful example aroma chemical is Dihydromyrcenol, a clean, citrus-lavender, slightly metallic-fresh material that defined the “fresh fougère” era and sits squarely at the top. Citrus essential oils are gorgeous but fade fast — which is exactly why we layer them over longer-lasting notes below.

  • Character: sharp, fresh, sparkling, sometimes green or fruity.
  • Longevity: minutes.
  • Typical share of a formula: 15–30%.

Heart Notes: The Body of the Perfume

As the top notes fade, the heart notes step forward. This is the personality of the perfume — the part people most often describe as “the scent.” Florals, spices and fruity facets usually live here.

A flagship heart material is Hedione, a soft, radiant jasmine-magnolia molecule that adds transparency and “lift,” making other materials feel more natural and diffusive. Rose, jasmine, geranium, ylang-ylang and warm spices like cinnamon or nutmeg are classic heart players. The heart bridges the volatile top and the heavy base, so its medium volatility is essential for a smooth transition.

  • Character: rounded, floral, spicy, fruity — the “mood.”
  • Longevity: 2–4 hours.
  • Typical share of a formula: 30–50%.

Base Notes: The Foundation and Dry-Down

Base notes are the heavy, slow-evaporating materials that give a perfume depth, warmth and staying power. They are still faintly perceptible hours after spraying — this lingering finish is the dry-down. Bases also act as fixatives, slowing the evaporation of lighter notes.

Many of the most useful modern base materials are aroma chemicals:

  • Iso E Super — smooth, velvety, woody-ambery; adds volume and a transparent skin-like warmth.
  • Ambroxan — dry, warm, ambergris-like; intensely long-lasting and a superb fixative.
  • Galaxolide — a clean, sweet white musk that delivers softness and remarkable tenacity.

Resins (benzoin, labdanum), woods (sandalwood, cedar), vanilla and musks all belong here.

  • Character: warm, woody, musky, ambery, sweet, resinous.
  • Longevity: many hours to days.
  • Typical share of a formula: 20–40%.

A Simple Three-Layer Mini-Formula

Here is a beginner-friendly fresh-woody concentrate you can scale. Always weigh by mass in grams (never by drops — drop size varies wildly) and think in percentages of the fragrance concentrate:

  • Top (25%): Dihydromyrcenol 15% + bergamot oil 10%
  • Heart (35%): Hedione 20% + geranium oil 10% + a touch of rose base 5%
  • Base (40%): Iso E Super 20% + Galaxolide (50% dilution) 12% + Ambroxan (10% dilution) 8%

Mix the concentrate, then dilute it into perfumer’s alcohol — commonly around 15–20% concentrate for an eau de parfum strength. Let it mature for a couple of weeks before judging; blends change as they settle.

Practical tips for blending in India

  • Dilute powerful materials. Iso E Super, Ambroxan and musks are best handled as 10–50% solutions in a solvent such as TEC (triethyl citrate) so tiny amounts can be weighed accurately.
  • Patch-test every new blend on the inner forearm and wait 24 hours before wider use.
  • Respect IFRA. Many materials have recommended maximum levels for skin products; check current IFRA guidance before selling or sharing.
  • Keep notes. Record every gram — reproducibility is the perfumer’s superpower.
