Aldehyde C-18 is the old trade name for gamma-nonalactone, the creamy coconut note of perfumery. Despite the name it is neither an aldehyde nor an 18-carbon molecule. The label is a historical quirk that stuck.

What it smells like

Creamy, milky coconut with a sweet, slightly fatty richness. It is quite strong and long-lasting.

How perfumers use it

It is the natural choice for coconut, suntan and tropical accords, and a little adds creamy skin-warmth to tuberose, gardenia and other white florals. In gourmands it pairs with vanillin and coumarin. Start low. Overdosed, it turns plasticky.

Blends well with: Coumarin, Ethyl Vanillin, Hedione, Musks, Benzyl Salicylate.
