Alpha damascone is one of the rose ketones, the tiny-dose materials that make a rose accord smell like a real rose instead of a soap. It is extremely powerful. A fraction of a percent changes a whole formula, so treat it like a spice rather than an ingredient.
What it smells like
Fruity rose with a green-apple crispness, blackcurrant and a hint of dried plum. Neat from the bottle it can smell almost harsh; diluted to 1% it opens up into a juicy, natural-smelling rose.
How perfumers use it
Work from a 1% or 10% dilution and add it drop by drop. It lifts rose, fruity florals and chypres, adds juiciness to apple and berry accords and pairs naturally with the ionones. Compared with beta damascone, the alpha isomer is greener and more apple-like; beta leans towards plum and tobacco.

How much alpha damascone should I use?
Very little. It is one of the strongest materials in perfumery, so work from a 1% dilution and build up slowly. Always check the IFRA limit for your product type.
What is the difference between alpha and beta damascone?
Alpha damascone is greener and more apple-rose; beta damascone is darker, with more plum, blackcurrant and tobacco. Both belong to the rose ketones.
